I have seen countless people mention and recommend this book. Usually, if it comes from Booktok, I am a bit wary to try it out but a close book blogging friend read it and loved it so I thought I would like it too.

I really did want to like it and enjoy it and not feel like I was trapped in getting through the book for what felt like a thousand years and usually, it isn't this hard to get through a book. This book started out great, with the banter of two of the six main characters and by the time we got introduced to the rest, my thoughts changed. As I got further into it, it's the sort of book where nothing interesting happens plot wise and where all the drama is within the main characters who were supposed to seem like they had depth, but actually don't.

So, the amount of times I wanted to not finish this book was astounding. Now, onto the usual.

Short Summary: Six people get chosen for their magical powers to the Alexandrian Society of Knowledge where they could become members-- if they kill one so five remain.

Long Summary: I won't bore you all with the book summary given so here goes my hot takes on the six main characters and the "plot" of this book.

Libby Rhodes: the physicist, good with waves, complains a lot and serves as the good girl who believes she is smarter than Nico De Varona.

Nicólas Ferrer De Varona- Libby's academic rival, can be full of himself but also my favorite character who has interesting motives for being in the society. (slight spoiler: researching how to save a roommate ;)

Reina Mori: A naturalist who can control plants as well as serve as a energy source for Nico and Libby, this woman just wants to learn more and be antisocial with nearly everyone. (Her chapters were hard to get through because of how boring her pov feels)

Parisa Kamali: The resident femme fatale who claims to know everyone's weakness because of her mind reading powers. People like her, I don't. That is all.

Tristan Caine: the resident emotional disaster who is indecisive about nearly everything that can see through illusions and maybe travel through time...

Callum Nova: The worst of them all with the superiority complex that can control everyone's emotions. Expert manipulator.

So, these six people become part of the society, face a security breach, go through trying to make alliances but the stake of choosing to kill one aren't that high and a lot of it is just emotional manipulation, showing off powers, pretending to be deep but actually very pretentious people who only think of power and/or sex and in the end, get completely bamboozled by another player in their game who hid in the shadows.

So, there is a lot more slander I could add to this book, about all the things I disliked but the one good thing this book did apart from creating Nico is that it set up the premise for book 2 which appears to hopefully be better than book 1.

In the end, skip if you can as booktok overhyped this book and if you do read, prepare for the headaches it will cause you.

Overall: 2.5/5 stars
