I love Marie Lu's work. Ever since I read Legend, and through all her books, nearly all of them have been ones that I have enjoyed. While I don't own all of her books, I have read all of them, with the Skyhunter duology being my favorite and after her last book, Steelstriker... I was ready for more. She has once again, delivered a book that wrapped itself around me like a blanket, then made my heart ache as I laughed and teared up a bit, but in the true Marie Lu fashion, her words always hypnotize me and it's been quite hard to put the book down.
So, here we go.
Short Summary: a K-pop star gets recruited to become a spy to work alongisde the girl that dislikes him who will be his bodyguard as he gets close to the daughter of a criminal tycoon from wreaking havoc in the world. *Cue Mission Impossible opening theme*
Long Summary: Winter Young has it all. K-pop popstar, fully booked tours, millions and millions of adoring fans, and despite all the fame... he doesn't have the one thing he wants, but can never seem to get: Love.
His mother always mixes him up with his half-brother, Artie who died in an accident. His brother was the only other person he cared about and ever since he's been gone, Winter hasn't been the same. When he gets recruited by the Panacea group, he discovers two things:
His brother was a spy.
The world will end if he doesn't accept to help.
The mission? Sing for the daughter of a criminal tycoon hellbent on delivering a chemical weapon that can kill millions if left at the wrong hands. But he can't do it alone, and for that he needs Sydney Cosette's help. Unfortunately, she hates everything he stands for.
Sydney Cosette is one of Panacea's best agents, but she has a secret lung condition that could threaten her career. In able to be promoted as a full agent, she has to work with Winter who seems like a foolish attempt of a spy.
But the more she uncovers the layers of the pop star she dislikes, the more she lets herself be more vulnerable to him as he uncovers the secret that could destroy her career. As she depends on him to not mess this mission, her life is also at his hands.
Because a few words could ruin everything she's trying to protect, including her stubborn heart that may be falling for Winter. And the more the frosty demeanor starts to melt, the more she realizes that this mission might be causing Winter to fall for her too...
But will either cave in to what they feel or will this be the first and only job they'll have together?
I LOVE Mission Impossible. Knowing that the inspiration of this book was from the films and the idea of having superstars and spies coexist in a dangerous, glittering world of fame, opulence and crime is stuff that I live for. After art heists being my first favorite, the world of spies in crazy, adventurous journeys makes my heart happy. I fell in love with both characters and enjoyed how there were parts of Winter that I could relate to, and Sydney's habits that made her such a unique and fascinating character to read about. The banter was great as usual and I love that as I was reading, I was at the edge of my seat until Marie Lu really said...
"Guess what? Let me kill the guy everyone wants alive!"
And she turns all the knowledge we thought we knew upside down as we start to wonder who is TRULY pulling the strings. The cast of characters was great and each one presents something interesting to the table which proves how she never fails to disappoint. So, I can be more than pleased to say that this is definitely one of my favorite reads of this year.
Overall: 5/5 Stars
