In the literary world, every genre has its set of famous authors that people automatically read and authors that have left a memorable mark in the life of readers. For some reason, Tahereh Mafi is one of those authors who gets her own category in Barnes and Noble and gets recommended for one of the best dystopian series out there after The Hunger Games and Divergent. I haven't touched a dystopian book series since probably Marie Lu's Prodigy series which I loved. The reason I have finally picked up this series was being gifted the first book by my best friend and I trust her judgment in books.
AND SHE WAS NOT WRONG BECAUSE THIS BOOK WAS ADDICTING.
So, here we go with the usual.
Short Summary: A girl with a deadly touch gets recruited to work for the bad guys before discovering that there might be a world out there with people with powers like hers and it's only a matter of time before she discovers that she may be more powerful than the government.
Long Summary: Juliette Ferrars can kill with just a single touch but before she can discover why she has her powers or how she can control them, she gets imprisoned and experimented on.
That is, until Adam Kent shows up. A boy who is too curious for his own good, but a boy who Juliette can't ever forget even if it seems he may have forgotten her. What seems like an uneasy alliance becomes more as they get recruited by a Re-establishment branch led by Warner, who seems a little too interested in her power.
But, how can you contain a power that can't be touched without dying?
I read this book in a day and a half, making sure to text my friend obsessively with my reactions and while the two love interests haven't fully convinced me of being worthy of Juliette, I absolutely love her character and am absorbed in the somewhat chaotic and erratic storytelling of a girl who yearns to be more than someone who can kill with her touch. So, from here, I will eventually finish the entire series but for now, I am currently trying to get through the novella Destroy me from Warner's pov before entering book 2.
So, I will see you all later with more reviews from this series.
Overall: 5/5 stars.
