I grew up with James Bond films and watching Mission Impossible (we don't talk about the latest one though) and The Man from U.N.C.L.E will still be one of my favorites, but for all my love of spy films/spy series, I haven't actually read many spy centered books. Do I still write about spies? Absolutely, but I decided I wanted to read a bit more in this genre since it borders more onto the thriller aspect.
And, an interesting trip was taken, so here we go.
Short Summary: A woman wishing for something more out of life ends up becoming the perfect spy for an operation years in the making.
In reality, it's a lot more complicated than that. For one, this book isn't fast paced like the spy films we're used to seeing. Meanwhile, this one flows more into the slower paced, the psychological side of being (and becoming) the perfect spy, how that ties to duty, love, purpose, espionage as if it were a form of faith and even what I like the call, the "broken mirrors of people".
Think of it this way: When a mirror breaks, there are various glass shards and it distorts the face of the person, showing facets, layers, things that weren't exactly visible before, almost as if a mask were breaking.
This is what this book is. It dives deep into what we think we know about espionage, what it really is, and how we, as people, are like spies in our own way, crafting ourselves to fit a certain image whether that's in real life or on social media. In the case of the book, it's more about the secrets that get hidden, the facets of the people our narrator goes to spy and the delicate little cracks of what we think we know. It definitely leaves you thinking and while the pacing was a bit too slow for my taste, it still made for an intriguing read.
Overall:3.5/5 stars
