I bought this book before I knew about all the buzz it had been getting. I love preorders, so I always prefer to do that and get surprised rather than read it long after it has been released and once I went through buddy reading this one with @bookish.brie (and met new bookstagram friends because of this book!) I am pleased to say this book exceeded my expectations.
So here we go.
Short summary: the daughter of a general unwillingly ends up competing to become a dragon rider as she either learns how to ride... or die.
Long Summary: Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.
But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.
With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.
She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.
Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.
Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.
I believe the book synopsis covers it better than I ever will, but let me say that this was one of my favorite reads of the year and Violet became a character I rooted for with my whole heart. I personally have always had bad knees and have dealt with lots of knee pain and seeing someone like Violet who lives with that pain all the time-- and still keeps fighting to survive truly serves as an inspiration for many. It's not everyday that we get to read about a disabled main character that so many come to love with their hearts, but this world has captured my attention and hasn't let go.
I won't spoil the gasping and crying towards the end or the fact that book 2 needs to come a bit faster so I can snicker like an evil witch and read more about what happens next with her. This Violet is definitely a memorable one.
Overall: 5/5 stars
