I have had this book on my list for a while (*whispers loudly* since the release date of this book!) and the title got lost in the handwritten tbr list that only grows until I saw it at the library and finally got my hands on it.
I wish I could say this book was amazing and mysterious as the premise suggested, but here we go.
Short Summary: Girl accidentally curses her dad and has to figure out how to bless him with her ex-best friend who has secrets of his own.
Long Summary: Clara’s magic has always been wild. But it’s never been dangerous. Then a simple touch causes poisonous flowers to bloom in her father’s chest.
The only way to heal him is to cast an extremely difficult spell that requires perfect control. And the only person willing to help is her former best friend, Xavier, who’s grown from a sweet, shy child into someone distant and mysterious.
Xavier asks a terrible price in return, knowing Clara will give anything to save her father. As she struggles to reconcile the new Xavier with the boy she once loved, she discovers how many secrets he’s hiding. And as she hunts for the truth, she instead finds the root of a terrible darkness that’s taken hold in the queendom—a darkness only Clara’s magic is powerful enough to stop... if her magic doesn't kill everyone else first.
The premise was so promising but it fell flat in many ways and the relationship between Clara and Xavier wasn't as promising as I thought. Also... not much happens throughout the book and loose ties were left that was unnecessary considering it is a standalone.
At least it was a happy ending.
Overall: 2/5 stars
