Instagram advertised this book so many times to me and of course, I said to myself: "The cover looks cool, I'll give it a try sometime."
And then, I proceeded to forget about it until one of my book blogging friends (shoutout to @bookmonk._) for the reminder to pick it up and ACTUALLY read it since it was in my library stash and I told myself I would give it a try.
I am hooked now, but let's head onto the double dose of madness this book entails.
Short summary: Twin sisters end up swapping positions, with the witchy twin taking over her royal twin sister to discover that the claim to get the crown to stop a war from killing all the remaining witches is harder than they thought. Add two charming love interests and we get twice the emotional distress
Longer Summary: Wren Greenrock is meant to be the legitimate heir to the throne her twin sister Rose Valhart is currently occupying. In able to stop a war from killing the witches Wren was raised by, she plans for her twin sister to get kidnapped as she takes over to claim the crown and destroy the man who murdered her parents. But she doesn't expect that being a princess would entail an enemy nation in an arranged marriage that could tear her entire future apart.
Rose Valhart is supposed to become queen by her 18th birthday. Instead, she is being dragged across the desert and onto an adventure beyond her wildest dreams as she discovers her true origins and when she falls in love with her kidnapper, she realizes perhaps there is more to the world than frilly dresses and a crown that rules over many. When the twins realize their own plans are not working out, they must join forces to stop chaos from rising, but perhaps destiny meant for them to do more than just cause chaos.
How do I explain the fact that I am 100% on Wren's team without making the point that Rose has the more interesting journey? I absolutely love the free-spirited Wren and her banter with the Gevran guard, Tor was absolutely wonderful (my heart roots for them all the way!) but her plotline isn't as entertaining as one would expect it to be.
Rose on the other hand is whiny, a bit of a brat and definitely someone who we want to throw a gust of sand to, but her adventure with her kidnapper and warrior witch Shen has us laughing and their exchange were definitely fun and frankly, her discovering who she really is meant to be is quite fulfilling. Their arc reminds me an awful lot like Arjun and Haidee from The Never Tilting World duology, (I wholeheartedly recommend that for a similar read!)
Once their paths collide, they're kinda at each other's throats over the crown and being hypocritical around each other until then they're like I LOVE YOU and then everything goes downhill and things end bad and then you're left angry and wondering why you read this book now, knowing you'll have to wait until the second part is written.
That is precisely how it feels. Although the ending was rushed for my taste, there are many more good things that come out of this book, enough to keep me waiting for the next book (And for more moments between Tor and Wren when they *COUGH COUGH* reunite)
Respectfully, I am team Tor. No one will change my mind about that.
Overall: 4.5/5
