Jennifer Lynn Barnes is an author I have read before. But, in the midst of all the authors and books I have read in my lifetime, I suppose I forgot who she was and the Inheritance Games series is a popular one that I have seen many people talk about. Some of my close book blogging friends have posted about it and as Black Friday rolled around, I bought Book 1 and decided to gamble and buy book 2 as well.

A very risky gamble, indeed.

It is only when I read what the author's other works were that I said OHHH. And now, the journey begins.

Short Summary: Girl who lives in a car gets told she won a mysterious inheritance and needs to go claim it while fighting four enigmatic brothers who either love her, hate her or want her dead in a game of riddles, lies and betrayal.

Long Summary: Avery Grambs comes from nothing. With a dead mom, a dad who ghosted her, a sister with an abusive boyfriend and an old ratty car, she can only hope to do the best to get out of her hometown. In a couple of visits to the principal's office for supposedly cheating, her life changes when she is informed that she gained the inheritance of the mysterious Hawthorne family and that she needs to be present for the hearing.

What they don't tell her is that a game needs to be played to be able to claim said inheritance. And that among her opponents are the four Hawthorn brothers who have different intentions with her. It all lies on whether she will be able to unravel all the lies, the riddles and the puzzles to be closer to claiming victory all while surviving the trials placed on her by the brothers and those who don't wish her well.

But when you have nothing, what do you have to lose?

THIS BOOK. I would think that after all the hype and how I enjoyed her Debutantes series that I would come to enjoy this one. And for the most part, there were some good things including:

  1. The mystery that left me with more questions than answers.

  2. Jameson sounding like a drunk Mad Hatter every time he spoke to Avery.

  3. The creepy sensation that I still don't trust anyone in this book.

But other than that, as much as I hated the riddles, gasped at the conspiracy theories in my head about Nash being sus (I will probably die on this hill for now), whispered most of the lines of the Hawthorne Brothers in the worst southern accent ever, I don't find myself attached to any of the characters. Or rooting over Jameson VS Grayson (because this plot feel predictable and I'd like to not roll on my grave yet) Or particularly being too invested in the protagonist Avery who is just meh to me.

Like she could fall off a balcony and I'd laugh.

And the only reason I intend to read book 2 (apart of buying it of course!) is to hopefully see some of the issues solved.

Overall: 3/5 stars
