Mayday, May day: Books to cure the reading slump

Because reading slumps happen to everyone.

Remember when you're stuck on a car on a road trip wondering if "we're there yet?" and we get bored and antsy and tired all at once? Or whenever you're stuck trying to write a paper for a class and you can't get the words out?

Well, reading slumps happen to readers, even the best bookworms suffer of it too. Guilty as charged, I have read many less books since 2021 and it's not just because of life being busy and college getting in the way (although it does reduce your time significantly!) I used to be the crazy reader who read a bunch of books, running with ambitious goals like read 100-200 books by the end of the year and this included comic books too.

But a pandemic tires us in all senses and we're in a tricky time where we want to get out and do stuff and YET... have no energy to get it done. Same with books, but how do we get out of the slump? Is it even possible?

Well, I have 2 book recommendations to get fellow readers like you out of the slump (there will be more books to come, I promise!)

Getting out of the slump

1. RISE of the School for Good and Evil By: Soman Chainani

Song vibe check:

  • "Enemy" from Imagine Dragons

  • "Castle" The Huntsman: Winter's War version by Halsey

What's it about: In a few words, two disastrously gay brothers fighting over a guy and ignoring responsibilities resulting in a magical pen making crazy choices and a world being upended and thrown into chaos because of them.

The long version?

Two brothers get selected by The Storian, a magical pen that writes all the great fairytales, but when it starts to write the tale of Aladdin, who has all the qualities to be evil, but ends up in the school for good, his story will test the bond between brothers Rhian and Rafal as they enter their own battles for the balance of good and avil and how to stay loyal to their morals-- and to themselves. Essentially, it is a celebration of ALL types of love and the complicated threads of brotherhood and the fairytales we once knew.

Why: I will naturally read anything he writes, but this book dives into how the School for Good and Evil began and in all honesty, I am HERE for it.

2. All of us Villains By Amanda Foody and Christine Lynn Herman

Song vibe check:

  • "Villain" By: K/DA, Madison Beer and Kim Petras

  • "Devil I know" by Allie X

What's it about: In a few words, your not-so typical deadly tournament involving magic rings, contestants who all believe to be the best villains and a blood red moon that distorts everything into being red and to seeing red.

What it REALLY is about: The cable knit guy who appears intimidating, but is really awkward IRL. The girl everyone parades on display who has mommy issues. The disastrous outsider who makes more bad choices than good ones. The Know it all who annoys us for a living. The Ex of the Know it all who wants to win at all costs. A witchy cousin who wants everyone dead and a follower who goes with the flow. Throw all these people into a match to see who is the last one standing and you get: 5 survivors, a possible way to lift the curse of the tournament, couples breaking our hearts and villains you will root for as if you were in a football stadium. Goodreads will do a better job to summarize this one, but I assure you all it's GREAT and totally worth reading.

To start out with something simple, I listed these two as they were my most recent reads, but in the future, there will be many more book recs, so stay tuned! What books get you out of the reading slump? Do you think it's possible to get out of the slump? Let me know in the comments below!
